THIS MONTH IN CINEMA
The month of August happens to be a month of celebration, as our chief editor celebrates their birthday! While, he’ll likely be celebrating feasting on some Dagwood dogs and show bags at the EKKA, we’ll be checking out the great array of films and theatre acts set to feature this month.
Starting the month off strong is the action packed female equivalent to John Wick - Atomic Blonde, which sees Charlize Theron beat the living daylights out of an array of men whilst simultaneously looking absolutely stunning. Be sure to check out our giveaway section for your chance to win one of 5 in season double passes. Sharing the night are two comedic rivals; The Big Sick and The Trip to Spain. While they don’t have quite the budget of Atomic Blonde, they will be sure to have you crying with laughter and proving all the best things come in small packages.
Or, if you're in the mood for thriller, be swept away by Wind River as the mysterious murder that occurred on a Native American reservation unfolds. Heralding from the same writer as Sicario and Hell or High Water, we're eager to see Jeremy Renner's directorial debut. Stephen King is having a great year as yet another of his famous books, The Dark Tower, is being adapted to the big screen, check out our giveaway section for your chance to win one of five in season double passes. Speaking of great years, hopefully Tom Cruise can redeem himself from the disappointing release of The Mummy earlier this year, with American Made. The real-life story of pilot Barry Seal, a TWA pilot, who is recruited by the CIA and soon finds himself in charge of one of the biggest covert CIA operations in the history of the United States. Be sure to enter our giveaway for a chance to win one of five in season double passes.
If you haven’t caught one of the Nordic films screening at The Volvo Scandinavian Film Festival 2017, it’s not too late to visit Palace Cinemas and rug up whilst you’re transported to the icy depths of Scandinavia. Following the success of the Scandinavian Film Festival is the refreshed, rebooted and re-invigorated Brisbane International Film Festival (BIFF). The program features a number of films that screened at Cannes and Sundance. We’re super excited to check out the 23rd installment of this revamped festival and would like to share our enthusiasm by giving our followers a chance to win one of three double passes to any in season screening!
Across the border, the Arab International Film Festival will be screening in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth. We're hoping to have one of our interstate representatives attend the festival and give us a complete run down on this culturally unique festival. Closer to home, but with the same international flavour, is the month long celebration of Studio Ghilbi. Hosted at Dendy Portside, the month long expo will showcase all the works of Studio Ghibli, so be sure to catch your favourite.
Our pursuit to conquer the world of theatre continues as we pay another visit to the Queensland Theatre with their latest show My name is Jimi, a comedic yet poignant story about culture and it's increasing relevance to the Torres Strait Islanders. Be sure to check out our video of the opening night for a sneak peak. Or, alternatively for those who enjoy a little bit of horror, the Drac is back. Dracula returns to QPAC, produced and created by Shake & Stir Theatre Co, the same production company who brought us Animal Farm and 1984, and we're expecting nothing less than another absolutely brilliant evening at the theatre!
As always we’ve searched the web and collated all the best in advance screenings, collating it in one easy location for our loyal readers and followers to keep you up-to-date with where you can catch the latest films before everyone else.
