THIS MONTH IN CINEMA
The weather's cooling down, but the big screen is heating up with some major sci-fi and action release in May. Brisbane is set to finally see the continuing adventures of John Wick in John Wick: Chapter 2 (May 18), a sequel that, according to reviews from the rest of the world who have already had the pleasure of seeing it, is just as good as the first. Before that, though, we'll be given Ridley Scott's Alien Covenant. It's yet to be seen if his "re-invigoration" of the franchise will avoid the traps Prometheus fell into, but if the trailers are anything to go on, it looks amazing.
Other big blockbusters set to light up the Brisbane box office this month include the insane-looking, wonderfully cast and Guy Ritchie directed King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, and Johnny Depp's return as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
With a sprinkle of comedies (Amy Schumer's Snatched comes out May 11), indie-darlings (the well reviewed Zookeepers Wife will be out on May 4) and Universal's 5-star horror, Get Out (win tickets here), there's enough big screen entertainment to keep you out of the cold and in front of a screen all month.
Brisbane will also play host to a suite of great Film Festivals and Events this month. Along with the continuing Spanish Film Festival, the American Essentials Film Festival will be gracing Palace Cinemas from the 17th of May. The Brisbane Backyard Film Festival will be held on the 5th of May, and we're super excited about it. Showcasing the best of local Brisbane film, it's a great opportunity to get out and support your local artists. GOMA will be opening up it's Marvel: Creating The Cinematic Universe exhibit on the 27th of May, which is going to be an exquisite deep-dive into the world of Marvel movies.
